Jagata jizo

It is a welcome relief to arrive at Jagata Jizo. The area in front of the shrine has benches to sit on, and there is clean water available to refresh oneself. The jizo gets it name from a rock with fossilized seaweed swirling patterns placed at the back of the shrine. There were many ghosts of travelers who had died from one calamity after another and others who died of illness or starvation at Iwagami Pass, so the jizo was moved to the present location after a disasterous flood in 1889. It is said that this statue has some effect on asthma  and backaches, and people come from far away to pray here.
